What is a Green Hotel Six Things No Green Hotel Should be Without

It seems as if you cant turn around anymore without running into something “green.” Nowhere is that more true than in lodging. Green hotels or at least, those calling themselves green are sprouting up everywhere, and travelers are becoming increasingly more aware of what to look for and how to judge whether or not a green hotel actually is well, green!

You want your guests to know without a doubt that theres no green-washing happening at your green hotel. Ive put together a green hotel checklist so you can see how your property stacks up. Does your property have:

Staff Buy-In and Ongoing Education: In a truly green hotel, everyone from the front desk staff to the owner and everyone in between fully understands, supports, practices and can communicate the propertys environmental policies.

A Working (and funded!) Energy Strategy: Todays green hotels go beyond just changing a few light bulbs and implementing a linen reuse policy. They analyze their energy efficiency including conducting Energy Star benchmarking — and then seek out and apply for incentives, rebates and loans that allow them to make meaningful changes in their consumption.

A Green Purchasing Plan: From locally-grown organic produce for its banquet salads to environmentally sensitive cleaning products and furnishings, green hotels know where and how to source the most cost-effective earth-friendly products.

Green Hotel Certification: A green hotel designation from a certifying body that does on-site audits assures your guests that your property has met rigorous environmental standards.

Specialized Marketing: Green hotels recognize that expertly targeted internet marketing is vital to their ongoing success in an increasingly competitive industry.

So how does your property stack up? I know it seems daunting to meet all those requirements, to track down trustworthy, LEED-Accredited Professional advisors, find rebates and incentives, train everybody, and still manage to run a lodging facility who has time for that?

Thats why I created EcoGreenHotel to be a one-stop shop. We have trainers, engineers, financial advisors, purchasing and marketing specialists, thousands of quality green products and a certification program to meet the needs of every type and size of lodging facility at all stages in the green hotel process. We are LEED-Accredited Professionals specializing in energy efficiency. We can help your property achieve all of the above in the most cost-effective way possible, and we can start today.

Safety norms for hotel guests

Staying in hotels has become a regular part of our lives, therefore it is important to make sure that we know and follow the rules of hotel safety.
Maximize fire safety and security by selecting a room located between the 4 and 6th floor Avoid rooms above the sixth floor–the maximum height that fire-department ladders can reach

When possible do not except a hotel on the ground floor that has doors and windows that open to the outside.

For security in motels, avoid ground floor rooms off the parking lot. If you can’t get a room on a higher level, take one facing the inside courtyard.

Look for information in room about fire safety and read to become familiar with nearest fire exit / stairway and locate nearest fire exit.

When you enter your hotel room, make sure the door closes securely and that the deadbolt works. Keep the deadbolt and safety bar on at all time.

Select a hotel with modern electronic guest room locks, as these locks automatically change the lock combination with every new guest so there is little chance of a duplicate key to your room.

There should be fire sprinklers in hotel rooms, hallways, and meeting rooms likewise for smoke detectors.

Each room telephone should allow outside dialing.

Guest phones located in hallways and lobbies should not allow direct room dialing, so anyone using the phone should have to call the operator and request a room by guest name, not room number.

There should be secure locks on windows and adjoining doors.

The hotel should have well-lit interior hallways, parking structures and grounds.

The parking garage should not have elevators taking passengers to guest floors. It should only go to the lobby.

Don’t answer the door in a hotel or motel room without verifying who it is. If a person claims to be an employee, call the front desk and ask if someone from their staff is supposed to have access to your room and for what purpose.

Keep your room key with you at all times and don’t needlessly display it in public. Should you misplace it, please notify the front desk immediately
Close the door securely whenever you are in your room and use all of the locking devices provided.
Check to see that any sliding glass doors or windows and any connecting room doors are locked
Dont invite strangers to your room – ever.
Do not draw attention to yourself by displaying large amounts of cash or expensive jewelry.
Place all valuables in the hotel or motel’s safe deposit box, always.
When returning to your hotel or motel late in the evening, be aware of your surroundings, never be alone, stay in well-lighted areas, and use the main entrance.
Take a few moments and locate the nearest exit that may be used in the event of an emergency.
If you see any suspicious activity, notify the hotel operator or a staff member. Remember it is always “better to safe than sorry”

The Advantages Of Boutique Hotels

One of the reasons boutique hotels are so popular is because they directly oppose the accepted hotel normality of hundreds of rooms and bland service. Their refusal to treat guests as anything other than honoured visitors means that they spend time, money and energy developing a hotel where you feel comfortable and at home. This can only really be achieved with low room numbers.

Hotels in this sector have discovered that travellers are willing to pay for accommodation that is different in design and where even full occupancy means they’re not queuing for breakfast or waiting for room service to answer the phones. Instead, fewer rooms means more space and better service, and an increasing number of travellers are taking this option.

Space

Space is important to travellers, particularly those for whom the hotel is an integral part of the experience. Whilst other holiday makers or business travellers simply use a hotel as a base for sleeping and eating, boutique hotel guests want to feel that they can spend the morning drinking coffee and reading in the public areas without feeling like a nuisance, or relax by the pool without worrying about fighting for poolside space with other guests. By taking a definite decision to reduce the number of bedrooms so that each room has more space and by fashioning public areas that guests actually want to use, boutique hotels create a unique atmosphere that appeals to guests.

Design

Boutique hotels are often based in older, traditional buildings where creating larger guest rooms means considerable changes to the internal design of the building. Sympathetic architectural changes can be achieved with careful planning and this allows hotel owners and their designers to maintain and incorporate original features into a more modern, spacious room design. From keeping original windows to fitting the most modern of bathrooms, clever design allows these hotels to provide fewer rooms, whilst at the same time preserving the essential features of the building.

Service

The smaller the number of guests, the better the service can be. This is a concept that’s fully understood by the boutique industry and it strives to ensure that standards of service are exceptional. Any contact that the guest has with a member of staff should be a positive one and, in many cases, members of staff are trained to anticipate guests’ needs, ensuring that they are comfortable asking for anything, including help with activities outside the hotel as well as the facilities within it.

Lowering the number of rooms in a hotel, combined with good design, quality fittings and excellent service all combines to make a hotel unique and that’s what today’s travellers want.
